What’s so special about neodymium magnets?

Neodymium magnets—also known as a type of rare earth magnet—are very strong compared to other non-rare earth magnets. Specifically, their physical pull strength is high—giving them an impressive power to weight ratio (i.e., high remanence and high energy product). They are also extremely resistant to demagnetization (i.e., high coercivity) (although they do have a lower Curie temperature).

Their low corrosion resistance can be successfully overcome by coating them with various substances. Despite their impressive strength and other benefits, they are still very cost-effective—so it’s no surprise that neodymium magnets are used in many types of commercials applications. You can even find them in everyday products such as door locks, power tools, and headphones.

In the laboratory setting, they also have many uses, including spectrometers and stirrers with stepper motors. Neodymium magnets are also a popular core material in stirring bars. Rare earth stirring bars are ideal for unique stirring conditions, such as viscous media, higher solid content liquids, etc.

Happy Stirring!
